I was looking at spending some money and buying a metal detector on trademe or somewhere. Could anyone suggest a good price range to to start off at for a begginer? any website links would be greatly appreciated.

a great begginer machine and even after you learn is a fisher F2...they are priced at 345.00 and you just have to contact rgmcbrid on this forum as he is the fisher dealer...
there are cheaper machines out there but ill tell you now dont buy one of them 100.00 off trademe .you will be sadly dissapointed..they only get maybe 2 inches in depth and on a wet day maybe 3...not good at all...just ask ChrisCHCH..lol..
I guess it really depends on what you are planing on doing...
If you are mostly after coins/relics the F2 is a great starting point..if you are after gold.as well as coin/relics then the fisher goldbug is a good starter at 750.00

I started with the goldbug and havnt looked back..lol..and still run the goldbug as my 1 and only machine....or as i like to call it my SILVERBUG as i have found 17 silver rings,2 silver braclets and a silver necklace with it..not including the silver coins....and only 1 gold ring so far..hahaha

I really don't think you can go wrong with a Fisher F2 but if you can stretch the budget to an F4 it will be better at the beach (adjustable ground balance) and also have the DD coil.

Yep f2 or f4 or if you really cant afford that much or justify spending that much then a machine similar to what madsonicboating has in the buy sell trade section on here will do the job. Once you have tried a cheaper one, you can decide if its for you or not and if so, upgrade to a better machine.
I found a gold pocketwatch within 1 week of getting my fisher f2 so that got me hooked!

Yes you can get cheaper detectors, keep in mind that if you don't get off to a good start with a good machine you will lose interest very quickly, you will need to invest time into your purchase and there is no point getting a cheapo detector learning it and still not getting results. Sure some of the cheapo detectors are better than others but why risk it, start with something tried and trusted, if you decide you don't like it then it will be easy to sell.

But if your in the Dunedin area go cheap, cheap as you possibly can. That way there will be plenty for me to find after you've been there *;^)

You get what you pay for!!!!!!! if it's medium priced it's nasty, if it's cheaper it's even nastier. If it's gold you want to find, get the best, if you can't afford it, you'll have to save, then you won't have any regrets.
