According to FURTHER PAPERS RELATIVE TO THE OTAGO GOLD FIELDS - Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1865 Session:

http://atojs.natlib.govt...e=-------10--1------0--

Gives a nice run down and some useful geological pics.

Very interesting - I was not aware of this paper so a must to add to my selection.
There are many, many such records, some long and some mere scribbles which tell of interesting finds in interesting places. By reading such accounts and examining the old records, Papers Past and various other primary sources we learn a great deal about the country and such records and accounts can lead us to many hitherto forgotten locations. Due to the knowledge we have of some of the areas we have gone to we have had a good idea of what to look for and where to look and there is much to find out there yet.
The photos below comes clearly shows a piece of gold in quartz - one of several samples we have from a reef discovered by my son within the last few weeks...there are many secrets out there for the patient and diligent searcher and the first place to begin looking is not out in the hills but in such records as you have so kindly brought our attention to - many thanks.
