Gold claim at 12 mile creek for sale on trade me

It looks like it did not sell (yet). But it raises a question. In USA they have "gold clubs" which hold a gold claim area, often substantial, and members can search thereon. A visitor can join up.

Is there any interest in such a club in NZ to hold a claim area. What issues arise ??

Personally I love the idea. I don't have the means to purchase a gold claim for myself but would fully support any such club as you suggest for recreational fossickers.

Gavin - This claim either directly backs onto or is very close to a public fossicking area and has very easy access via 45 minutes or so along a maintained walking track. The waterfall in the photo is next to an old gold miners hut which is fully restored and you can even stay there courtesy of DOC.

Further down where the river meets Lake Wakatipu there is a beautiful DOC campsite that I’ve stayed at for $6 a night. 12 mile creek is of course 12 miles from the old Queenstown Post Office.

I'd love to own a claim like that one. I'm sure there are others that would be much more profitable but I find that spot particularly beautiful, there are fantastic camping oppurtunities (gold prospecting and camping go hand in hand for me) and would love to explore it more. I was having a go in the public fossicking area there a few years back when there those massive bush fires in Australia. It was quite surreal to walk up that canyon with an eerie haze of dull orange in the sky.

Hmm Ive thought about this alot recently but geting an area of river with ok access, reasonable gold to keep members happy is pretty hard to come by as most of these areas have been snapped up pretty quickly.
Next issue would be the doc and f&g as they are usually very difficult to deal with in reguards to larger dredges and also multiple dredges which if a club was formed this would be an issue.
As for the interest in a club i think if someone can come through with starting one and having a club area to dredge,sluice highbank etc you would have huge interest as in the last few years in nz it seems to have got more popular then ever.
I am sure that in the next few years something along these lines will happen its just a matter of getting through the red tape. maybe an area in otago would be suitable i.e the 12 mile or another river that comes under the section 7 he mentioned as it alows multiple dredges on the river up to 6 inch providing they are more then 500m apart.

interesting. just a couple of days ago i was talking to a guy who was having a good laugh at this so called claim.

the guy didn't seem to realise that when he submitted the original claim that half of the area was actually a doc public access area.

the claim for sale consists of the stream up creek form the maori gully confluence.

all the rest of the tributaries have historically produced f all gold.

access past the hut is next to impossible.

the track itself is well formed but steep to the maori gully bridge.

the section of the 12 mile that is included is gorgey with limited access.

i have talked to several people in regards to the creek and gold. its been heavily worked back in the day as its not that deep in most places.

the hill that got sluiced away saw a lot of crap brought down into the creek.

at first i thought this would be a great spot. i even had a bit of a prospect up there myself but had bugger all luck. i actually found more specks/dust down at the public section by the carpark.

from my understanding and research i think the moonlight fault runs up the creek but heads thru the hills towards moke lake from the hut. this would explain why there is no sign of workings past the hut and why many locals have said they haven't found bugger all past there either.

as for the side creek, maori gully (also known in the old days as few's creek i think), not much was found up there either. there is signs of a camp at the junction but i haven't seen any evidence of workings or huts past there.

in summary i think all the good spots have been claimed in the last couple of years by the many long time locals with the knowledge of where the gold is, and most of all with the knowledge of who has worked where by whatever means and to whatever extent in the last several decades.

before getting too excited by whats on trade me it pays to talk to those with local knowledge i think before commiting large sums like this guy has.

myself i think he will be lucky to get his gold permit fees back if he manages to sell.

also by the sounds of it there is no access agreement or anything done in regards to water discharge etc.

a lot of groups do guided walks up there and i doubt much would get past these and locals without a fight/money take.

while on the topic of the 12 mile does anyone have any further knowledge of the history of mining up there, especially in the recent decades.

it's easy to see the older history, shafts, sluicings etc on the creek edges. unlike other diggings in the wakatipu i have noticed in several spots they seemed to only skim the surface, digging the top metre or two. odd, as it is soil with no sign of gravel or rock. also there are several promising spots where huge boulders can be seen. seems to be where the old lake level was before the last glacial period. what i find odd is that some of these areas have been heavily sluiced but some adjacent good looking spots have been worked past. perhaps the gold was patchy. the surface above was worked as there are tailings up there. but again odd as if the gold was on the surface why have they gone deep right next to it as if working a deep gold layer?
