I am starting to get the metal detector to talk to me - today was the first day I found much more than coins and junk.

Tahuna Beach Finds

Silver Ring

All in all not a bad day at the beach while the kids had a swim etc

There are certainly a few perks to this beach hunting - much more interesting than feeding the mozzies up some creek. But I still have to find that nugget with my name on it .. so hopefully next week I can venture down to the gold fields for a look.

Way to go Mine4gold. Is that ring stamped? Looks chunky.
I see youve found phbucket. If you resize the piks to 620 then they fit nicely on the page. Even after there posted they will automatically resize.

Thanks Shane.

Yes the ring is stamped 925. Although it isn't quite as chunky as it looks - the wide part is hollow inside. It is 10 grams which at the current scrap value is $10.
Nice start to the silver collection - got a long way to go to catch up with you guys. Waiting to get a pinpointer before I attack the local historic spots.

Went for a quick look with the metal detector at a glacier on my way South. Found nothing. My 8 year old daughter found a $50 note while following me around. Who needs a metal detector!

South? Mate there is bigger and nicer gold on the coast. Get an underwater coil for your detector and detect the banks of streams and rivers after floods. Good luck

On the coast ... I am up for instruction if you want to take me out some time.
I have the waterproof coil, just haven't found a decent river that has gold big enough to register, or that isn't full of iron.

Mind you, after stopping in Hokitika for the night and visiting one of the gold shops to hold a nugget the size of my palm (that reputedly came from a public fossicking area near here) I am making plans to spend more time in them thar hills.

Maybe not amazing but much better than the 3 half penny's I got in a hunt last week. :-)
Hope the ice creams were nice.

Hey mineforgold. I wonder where if you had sold any scrap silver/gold. I have been posting mine from DN to New Zealand Gold merchants refinery in penrose, in AK; but if you know a better place I would be happy to try elsewhere. I was getting about 87 cents a gram for silver before xmas. $1 sounds way better. Cheers Tonznz

87 cents a gram or a grain - I would have thought that at 87 cents a grain then you would get $417.60 per troy ounce but at 87 cents per gramme you would only get $26.00 per troy ounce or thereabouts - I havent got a calculator so cant be bothered working it out exactly...or is it me getting my maths wrong?

Check out goldprice.org silver is about $40nz oz, Gold is$2060nz oz, yea we need a list of old conversions in modern calendars. I still like to use grains and penny weight measurement to keep the traditional ways alive.

I haven't actually sold any MetalKiwi - I did take the ring to a local jeweler and ask him what the scrap value was (out of curiosity), and that was the price he gave me.

Whatever they are paying now, I expect by this time next year it will be worth significantly more.
