Hey guys myself and a friend are planning a trip down to the Coromandel to try our hand at some panning.
I have been planning this trip for a few years now done a lot of research over that time (most of which I have forgotten) but I was unable to go
due to health issues that I have had to deal with in that time (Brain tumor) - better now so would like to go down for the weekend
for day or two worth of panning just to get out and enjoy nature etc.
However being that there are no dedicated fossicking areas in the north island (which is a shame) I thought I would get some
tips/pointers/suggestions on the matter, i.e. how to be discrete, also unsaid rules of the area so as not to upset any locals etc or should I even not go do to the legality of the whole thing..
I do not want to do anything thats going to ruin it for anyone else thus the more information I can gather here about panning in the area
i.e. how to be discrete, what things should be considered about fossicking in the rivers and anything you can think of I might need to know.
Lastly there are two streams we have planned to visit are
Moanataiari stream & Waiotahi stream

Hi,
Just came back from Tapu creek . Sent 13 wet days camping. The rivers are high which makes them hard to work , but shows where there are whirl pools which you can come back to later as the water drops. I got a very small amount of very fine grains from the Tapu. From the coast road , turn right on to the coroglen Rd which goes up the Tapu Creek . About half a k up you will see a Ford on your left. Try working below and above it. Just out of Thames you'll see a sign for a Butterfly house and camp grounds. It's called Tararu or Victoria St. Go up there through a Ford until you get to a car park on your right called tinkers gulley. Walk up the track about 50 ft. Go down into the creek . On the other side you'll see tailings from a mine with heaps of quarts so if you don't find any gold you can always pick up some nice quarts and if your really lucky you can find some with tiny bits of gold in them. Another good place to find quarts with tiny bits of gold is the mouth of the Waiomu at the high water mark . Waiomu is good for fine gold ,but you have to tramp a fair way up it. Te Mata creek is worth a play in . As you are going for a short time and as the gold is hard to find and very fine. Seive you gravel first. This saves so much time and just pan down to the black sand or red and suck it up into your bottle . You can play with it at home. You can'nt take the creek home.
