Damn. It's 4S. I'm still hoping my iPhone 4 that my dear wife left in the kitchen area of a camping ground miraculously appears somewhere. :(

I have returned the phone to its owner, who already gpt a replacement phone via INS company .
I have received 100$ as a reward.
Person told me that phone was lost 19/02 !!! i even can not imagine how did it survive for that long!

Now, i want everyone's opinion :

Phone worth 1100$
700 mixed photos and videos - priceless.
5H detecting and afford to clean the device and contact owner.

100$? your opinion?

thanks :D

Not a lot was it Max - $100 - Hmmm.

Well there is no way you could have known he / she had already claimed insurance.
Makes me wonder if that phone you returned is already on trade me. Theoretically
they should return it to the insurance company as it will be their property now.

Maybe that is the clue to a good return for your effort next time - sell the found item to the insurance co.
if there is some way of finding out which one.

I think sometimes it is hard to know whether to apply the finders - keepers rule or not.

Good on you for trying to do the right thing though.

Metal Kiwi - I aint never applied the finders keepers philosophy in my life and as someone owns it and to return it is the right thing - whether they inform the insurance comp0any or not is up to them and this is where I have a quizzical approach as I was treated totally unfairly by one of New Zealands insurance companies last year and as far as I am concerned 'Deal to them the deal they deal to you' - I never made any small claims in all the years except one camera and one pair og lasses and then when we lost two cars written off I had a hell of a trouble with the insurance company. In the end is was only by threatening to go public that they sent me the money for the vehicles when they were sold as well as the insured amount but more to it than that - they are rogues!

As far as private property I found - it will always go to the police to see if the owner has declared it lost and take it from there.

Another perspective could be that the owner of the phone could have said to Max.

" Oh thanks for contacting me but it has already been replaced by my insurance company
so I don't need it - you keep it Mr Honest Metal Detector man. "

Yap. that would be really nice.

I see the trend like this :

people loose item ,lets say worth 1000$ and they all like :' i will pay anything to get my think back... i will do anything to have it back "
and once item is returned they like : "oh thanks." in best case "oh thanks- here is a cheap 10$ bottle of wine"

It reminds me of a family stuck at the beach cos the lost they car key in the sand and spent 30-40 minutes trying to find ONE key in the sand (no key ring with a token or anything) and after those 40 minutes they asked for help - we got a key. - all they said "thanks."

if we refused they would of had to be either towed, and pay 240 or someone should somehow go home to get second key- if there is one.

I am a good character person, do not take me wrong, but i am not gonna help anyone for nothing anymore.
I will be asking : "what is it worth for you? and what is there for me?" if person will be like "oh that's nothing" - i will be be - Ok then, there is no need to search for it.

its is all moral things. each of us will have a different opinion. but lets face it. what is the point to spent one's time to search someones items if you can not keep them or you do not get decent reward?
People pay bloody 100 for haircut, 40$ for a main dish in a restaraunt and they so stingy when it comes to reward a person.

i agree with lammerlaw...im not out metal detecting to make money..i do it because i enjoy it...if im at the beach and someone says can you help me we just lost this or that
then i help them...my rewards is the satisfaction of knowing that i was able to help....if they reward me then it is just a bonus...

you did the right thing by turning the phone in....even though they got a new one through insurance your concients is clear knowing you did the right thing and you got 100.00
in your pocket that you didnt have befor....
dont think of it as them being cheap for not giving you more because the phone was worth more....think of it as a good deed rewarded.....

You are totalling in your time spent detecting, and the efort to clean it...that was good of you for cleaning it....but they didnt ask you to go find it..you were just out doing what we enjoy..DETECTING..
so you cant add time in .
it would definatly be different if they asked you to do it..then yes your time spent finding it would be worth more

I go out on 8 and 9 hour hunts sometimes, weather permitting..and i am doing it for me because i enjoy it...if after 6 hours hunting i find something real valuble and turn it in
and the rightfull owner is found i cant say to them..that thing is worth 2000 so you owe me 600 or 700...
if they contact me and give me 100 i would say thank you and be happy knowing i did the right thing....that is 100 more than i had befor and it means my detectors
is paying for itself..lol...

Sometimes a photo with the person being reacquainted with their lost possession is good. Might be a bit like a testimonial to your good work. I have helped people out in the past and warm and fuzzies are good for the soul. If you do find something and you can identify the owner, ask them if they have claimed insurance. They can't double dip. The insurance company will be pretty pissssed if they found out that they had paid out AND the person got their lost item back. Their policy could get cancelled and they may find it pretty hard to get another one.

Good evening everyone.

I took a bus to Mission bay in order to beat the "Around the Bays" traffic.
I have spent 4 Hours learning the beach and answering "have you found anything ? What are you looking for?".
Imagine the nightmare of detectorist : thousands of people running in a big wave and constantly asking the above questions...Crazy!!
Anyway, i will cut to the chase - Two nice silver rings and heaps of crap jewelry :

The Female ring has Big Stone and 3 stones on the sides and weights 2.13
The Male Ring has engraving "Light of my life" inside and weights 7.79

My Total Silver weight for the weekend is 28 grams and 1 Gram of Gold
about 30$ spendable money as well

Amazing.
Are there a lot more people up there chucking their rings away after a split or do they just wear a lot of jewelery to the beach?
