Hi , Im a gold mining enthusiast based in Paroa, new to the forums, and keen to get into the hills and find a little colour. I have been checking out a few local battery sites but havent heard of many alluvial ares. Finding nice amethyst and quartz crystal at Komata has kept me happy for now but i would really appreciate any advice or direction from anybody.

Welcome to the forum....

You haven't heard of many alluvial deposits because there were very few over the coromandel and the ones that were found were depleted very quickly. Most of the gold came from quartz veins and crushed out with brute force.

There are many books written on the area that might give you a better Insight as to where to head if your looking for a bit of colour. As it's been said most creeks on the coromandel have some gold it's just a matter of looking where someone else hasn't.
It can be hard to find gold in the coromandel and if you do find it you deserve it.

Welcome to the forum steddy, although i am not from new zealand i enjoy reading and trying to learn about the gold mining and where it is located on the coromandel,
a few years back i bought a book called coromandel gold, and its a guide to most of the gold fields and mines on the coromandel,it also gives you tips where you might get lucky its pretty comprehensive, bought it at one of the big book stores in auckland, i am going to post a picture of the book cover hope it comes out ok i just took it with my phone.
Good luck .

Gidday Steddy,

Here's a couple of places from my "to go to" list. I haven't been to them yet, but they are definitely round tuit places.

Go across the Karangahake swing bridge. A small stream runs into the Ohinemuri about 300m downstream from the Waitawheta. There is a walkway that follows this stream part way up the mountain. Many years ago there was a shack by the stream and a gold panning place. I don't know where the dirt came from or whether it was salted but access is easy and I've always intended to check it out, just never got there.

Have a look up the Waitekauri.

Go up the Maratoto. Read the book "Maratoto Gold" for inspiration if you need to. I've found a few specks scratching out cracks in the main stream. There are some nice blocks of quartz in the last stream on the right before the end of the road. Between the quarry and a waterfall.

Steddy, I've done a bit of research and have a few spots that may be worth a try just north of Thames and have found a little gold at Waitekauri. I'm keen on having another crack at it, let me know if you need someone to tag along and carry your gold out for you.
