Spring has sprung. There's no snow and no sandflies so I took the sluicebox out and gave it a wash in the creek.

Now, if I could get hold of a miniature coin to place beside this in the photo, it would look much bigger.

Nice yellow gjj109.
Is that silver with some of the smaller pieces?

Gidday Chris,

That is actually mercury. Most of the creeks seem to have a bit of it.

Nice. But why dont you keep all your Coro gold posts & pics all on the same page instead of doing a new page each time you find something & share it with us? I actualy think there is a page way back on coro gold. That way all the Coro stuff is kept together & easier for all to follow

Cheers

JW :).

Hi Gary,

Last time I saw Mercury in a creek was up at Ngawha Springs back in the 60's. There was actually some quite big globules
of it on the creek bed.. No gold though. Mercury is quite toxic I think.
That gold sure looks good - hope you get more soon.

Hi Guys, Any mercury found in a creek in the Coro would have come from mining as either lost from the early stampers & copper gold tables or from the sluice boxs from the early ground sluicing days that was done in a few spots. You will find that the mercury will have gold amalgamated with it. I have recovered good amounts of gold from such mercury that I have found in my sluice box in certain creeks. Especialy in the areas of where stampers had been.

yes\you are right mercury is VERY toxic especially the fume
gold (i think this is how it works) is absorbed into the mercury some how you put the murcury and gold with the fines eg iron sand in a container shak around and the mercury sucks up the gold and leaves the black sand behind you then boil of the mercury and you are left with a hockey pokey of gold

if this is the case then you should keep all the mercury because it has gold in it
i have seen it being done so this is basicly how it works im sure some one out there will have a better idea of how it all works

remember mercury is dangerous and can be absorbed through the skin while touching it

Hi guys
not shure if boiling it will work....as when the mercury turns into gas from being heated it hits the water and it turns back into mercury again...but if you just want to get rid of the mercury off the gold just put it in a steel pan and put it over a gas cooker...OUT SIDE...it dissapears real quick..and is fearly safe just stand back.
iv seen it done properly with a reatort it shure does make dealing with black sand a lot easyer....here is some gold out of the reatort the white, ish stuff on the gold is chalk...this is used to stop the gold from sticking inside the reatort....
GBM.

Spring is in the air so I went for a stroll up the creek and threw a few shovels of gravel through the sluice.

I was pretty chuffed with the outcome.

Here are the little bits as well

And because these pieces are relatively hard to come by up here, I thought I would give this one a picture by itself.

Went for a bit of a wander down to the South Island for a few weeks at the end of November and the start of December.

Had a bit of a scratch in some West Coast creeks and a bit of a poke around in north Otago. Threw the odd shovel load of gravel into the sluice every now and then and ended up with a few grams of dust for the effort.

Seems it has pretty quiet on the Peninsula over the past few months.

Went for a wander to the top of the hill for a few hours one day last week.

Managed to separate a few colours from the gravel. A shame it's not of the same quality as the nuggets being displayed by those fortunate South Islanders but I guess you play the hand you are dealt.

Last week I took a pan up a creek I hadn't been to before. These few specks came from two small depressions in the bedrock close to the mouth of the stream, quite some distance from the workings that are at the top of the ridge. I expect the rewards to improve the further I walk. I realize these bits are pretty pathetic compared to the pictures from the South Island, but hopefully they demonstrate that there is gold to be found if one looks for it.

Man, that's coarse gold! Hasn't travelled far from the source.

Went for a walk earlier this week to yet another place. Didn't do particularly well but I thought I would post this picture to show the different shapes. The bits are about 3-4mm in size.

They would make great pieces to go in the clear lockets - bit more interesting than most of the stuff I find that is for sure.

My daughter has one if those with pieces from the South Island. I have a spare locket lying around somewhere. Might be a great idea to score some brownie points with her indoors on some forthcoming anniversary. Thanks for jogging the memory.
