I really enjoy your posts. A goldmine of information hehe
I must print out all these posts with coordinates one day and take another trip over there. Next trip is to the general Motueka area so if you have any good stories from up that way Kiwikeith, I'd be happy to hear them.
The trip after the Motueka trip (3 weeks) will be to the coast for sure though.
Thanks once again for these interesting little tidbits.

heres a hint on where to find gold in your area
this is a wall of my office one large map with pins in it where i find colour another colour pin for where i have been told there is gold get a length of cotton and string between pins to see if they form a line if they do try the creek between the pins on the line it seems to work also refer to the geology maps in the back of the "geological map 1:250000 " book put out by "geological & nuclear sciences" its a great read with a wealth of imformation cost me $34.90 from mapping world in chch you get the one covering the area you want to visit
once you have the map you then refer to the area with gold cross referenceing with the rock type on the map then again back to the wall map to see if there are other areas worth visiting

dont know if you can follow all this but to me it helps and works

edit note: the photos show things my wife and i do
hang gliding, gold mining, tramping, climbing 4wd ing and our yatch (now sold had to many toys)

yes i know its been awhile but havnt found much to do with gold

RUNANGA
nztm 1457332e 5301909 n very deep water race draining a wet land area

1459972 e 5301702 n another water race heading south both are in very open virgin bush

1460318 e 5301422 n a shaft thats about 7 to 8 m deep must have been deeper as there is a lot of stones around the area

MAORI GULLY
1465738 e 5289842 n
been playing in the area after work to fill in some time doing some ground sluicing thats moving rocks out of the creek and letting the water carry the sands and gold down to a holding dam finding some reasonable colour so if you are in the area maybe worth a visit feel free to carry on the work as there is enough to go round you will get colour but not rich

till next time

for the one following the old stories for some where to go

NELSON CREEK

i met a guy on mon or tus, came round to my friends house where im staying he had $7000 in his pocket not to bad for a 4 day stint. he has a 6" keen dredge with twin motors and working the nelson creek area on his mates claim he also showed me the photos where he was sucking and the bucket of that days wash it had 1/2 oz in it

this guy liked a patch of river so found out who had the claim and approached the guy who had the big toys eg 70ton digger etc cut a long story short he was given permision to dredge moral of the story "ask and you will recieve"

Nelson Creek - knew it well - I remember seeing a spot there in 1970 that I thought might be good to look in for gold and when I went back about six years ago I was completely, totally and dismally disorientated - same at Notown - it was all native trees when I worked around there.

Most people are happy to allow a bit of fossicking including dredging on their claims if a person approaches them first - the best approach by far is the personal one. For starters those who make a personal approach are usually decent sorts and it gives theland owner or claim owner an opportunity to assess them and make a judgement face to face.

Heavy snow lying on my place Keith - Henry and his brother are up there apparently...David and I are heading up tomorrow to join Henry...detector only methinks - I wont be waddling around in the creek!

reading a great book at present xmas from caz

MY DEAR BANNIE by GERHARD MUELLER

he was a surveyor on the coast 1865 to 1866 and wrote letters home to his wife

BRUCE BAY
there was good gold down there up the makawiho river according to gerhand the only reason they pulled out was the lack of supplies kept running out of food
saying how he lived on mussels eels and fern for 3 weeks because the seas were to rough for ships to drop of supplies
gold was fetching 3-15-0 thats $7.50 per oz

OKARITO LAGOON
"pays well with the average minner mining 2 oz per day"
seems that most of okarito was mainly beach sands

hes now in hoki so will read more and let you all know where to go next

Great photos Keith - thanks for showing them though I am not sure why I am thanking someone for making me jealous!

Have been wondering where west Coast stories had gone to - I thought you might have taken off to parts unknown.

just got back from a few days up the rahu saddle behind springs juntion
went mining on mon afternoon 2 tanks of petrol tus day with the fresh snow on the tops made the river a little cold so only spent about an hour under water got to rock bottom the two of us were working side by side you could see the gold just sitting there just put the old hose over it and up it went theres about a meter and half of over burdon bottom is at 1.5m and sloping down to the middle of the river
last time i was up there my pan split so lost most of the gold so had to suck there first i think i got it all well i hope so

no sign of gold in the rahu saddle area so far

say hi to david
