interesting article zimbo. its a shame it didn't also critique the use of the black matting as in the accompanying picture. i've never seen someone with so much of the stuff.
i think i mentioned the little pvc sluice concentrator i have. i ran a whole 10 litre bucket of black sand and recovered quite a bit of very fine gold. yet to weigh it. just goes to show how much of the fine stuff you can lose when using a magnet over dried black sand.

my blue bowl concentrator finally arrived and have been using it after every outing, it works really well even the salt grain size gold is won from the black sands, have you been out lately? zimbo attached the following image(s):

hi zimbo,
yeah, i've been out a few times but its been pretty cold. whenever its warm the water level comes up. haven't done too good as there's just too much water about. giving it a break for a bit but might try look for a few new spots. keen for some exploring now its warming up a little. the ice was making it a bit tricky.

Hi ZIMBO, I like the look of that combo ,Did you get that here in NZ at what cost? I wonder what sort of plastic it is made of ,im sure we could find some plastic engineers

the old blue bowel been looking at them for awhile now i can see how it works but dont know if it will
went to the sally shop the other week and found a plastic cooking o ring miro wave one
thought i would give it a go see if i can make one yea right!!! lol

Iv got 1 of thse blue bowls...im not that fussed on them.... i was looseing a fare bit of gold following the black sand up and over....but i was not classifing the material that great to start with so i will give it another go this season...if im still not happy il have a blue bowl for sale....along with a bucket sluice consintrator!

gbm hi gbm i use a home classifier which has about 4mm square mesh then a flour sieve, it takes me about 30mins to process a ice cream container of black sands concentrate, from my sluice box, you just have to watch your water flow and don't put to much in all at once, also slow down the water flow before putting in the concentrate. have a look at this link http://www.youtube.com/w...ZVX0&feature=related

yea my biggest problum was when trying to get rid of the larger bits of black sand that would build up so i crank the water flow up a bit to wash it out but then half the gold would go to!...but the smallest screen i was useing was whitebait mesh so still a bit big for the blue bowl i think...next time i give it a go iv got 1 of those fat screens that you put ontop of your frying pan...iv made 1 of those into a fine sieve so the blue bowl should handle that...if not there crap lol

The secret with the blue bowl is to classify the material you put through. You need to classify the material into several smaller sizes with a number of smaller size sieves. That way as you process each different size run of classified material the bowl is dealing with material of an even size mass. Not necessarily of an even weight but you will want the water speed & veloicity to be just enough to move off the lighter material. By keeping an eye on what is happening with the material you can adjust the water velocity to suit. The heavies including the gold will drag behind. If you just chuck the whole mixed up concentrates into the blue bowl, as GBM said, you will have to crank the water velocity up to move off the bigger heavier bits of iron sand & smaller stones. Guess what is going to happen to the finer smaller gold? You dont need to be a rocket scientest to work out that it will go down the center hole with the waste material. But by keeping the material you are running through the blue bowl of equal size & mass, by classifying, you will have a greater & better control over the material & increase your gold recovery rate.

Hi all, Ive had the same problem,so i took myself off to an old miner i know,TO learn how to safely use Mercury and retort. No more lost flour gold, my retort will hold two onces, the gold buyers give a better price on clean gold
