@Juggie - thanks for the offer mate. Already had a little explore of Danseys Pass before to see what the area was like. Briefly swung the detector around a bit, but was only a quick go so no joy. I'll give you a shout next time I head down that way to see if you're dad doesn't mind passing on a bit of local knowledge ;)

@kiwikeith - found a few sweet little spots next to the river myself excellent for camping - such a beautiful area! Was chuffed to see a few quails in the morning with their chicks foraging around - very cute wee things!

@Lammerlaw - I'm aware of these stones but never knew how to identify them. Used to be a keen rock collector as a kid. I'm going to start picking up stones now and giving them a shake to see if they rattle ;)

@dettol - Would love to catch up one evening when you're down. Send me a PM nearer the time and we'll sort something out.

If you go to Maerewhenua near Livingston just down from the workings you will find them...I have not got one which actually rattles but I did have one which was full of water but sadly the water gradually leaked out through a crack. You will if course know what Limonite looks like - rusty brown colour, oxide of iron. The rattle rocks are roughly round mostly and consist of this Limonite. When you shake them as you find them they will rattle though I was told that some will rattle after they have dried out internally, any moisture evaporating out of minute cracks etc. What you are looking for therefore is round rocks of iron oxide or Limonite. Bro0wn colour - if you find one though be careful and dont rattle it to death because if you shake it to hard its component parts just might part company. You could almost say that they are sort of like a geode which I guess they are.
I would be quite happy to take anyone looking for them if they wished and the trip could be organised.

For rock collectors I always thought that Nelson area and Otago were the places - Nelson area has Asbestos but better still native copper - for some obscure reason I go gaa gaa over native copper, love the stuff... the more I can get the better!

Otago has a great varietyof minerals - Cinnabar - The Waitahuna cinnaber mine was owned by the Nobels Explosive Company of Glasgow - that is in Waipori District, Copper Ore - I was the last person to hold the mining right over the Waitahuna Copper Lode, Scheelite - spent many a happy day looking for it at Macraes, Antimony, Manganese Ore including Rhodonite. Also a lot of fossil locations in Otago and South Canterbury - and so the list goes on.

As for rocks - love them but then again I actually collect everything...I note guys on here who tell of finding old pennies - my oldest ones of them is Edward II I think and Henry III, four in total.
I like metal ores generally and fossils and where ever I go I am looking for more than just gold...always keep the peepers to the ground...you never know what you will find.

I love hunting for ore. Great fun!

I have a mate with a crib beside the Kakanui, but I suspect he's a bit too far downstream to find much of interest. I have to go pay him a visit in Oamaru when I finally get back in the country so I'll take my detectors and stuff as well as my radio gear.

We were supposed to fly yesterday but the trans-pacific flight was cancelled due to the ash cloud.

Cheers goldfinger - spotted this one. Had a wander over to check it out - a hell of a pebbly beach! Someone suggested it's a black sand claim that might produce after storms etc.

here is part of the answer

Personally I think this is the height of optimism - if they really wanted prime beach frontage (I just had to say that because its as bleak as an Elephants arse along there as well as 'Gold?') they would have been better advised taking out the beach directly north of the Molyneux or Clutha river mouth or even the beach at Kakanui where I have actually found traces of gold myself in the past plus the added bonus of Garnet sand, Maori artifacts, Fossil Sharks teeth, a couple of WWI wire entanglement corkscrew posts but used in the WWII defenses, Moa cackleberry shell and Moa bones - bird ones south of the old Kakanui tip north of the river mouth and lawm mower ones in the old tip itself north of the boat club!...it sure is a fascinating place.
Then again I have been proved wrong in the past so they may pop a surprise and good luck to them.

I guess it's probably someone living locally who's seen a little colour in the past.

Some interesting finds you've been finding down there Lammerlaw! You must have eagle eyes!

I dont know about the Eagle eyes after all I never seem to see road signs that say 'Slow Down; or restrict your speed - I just think my brain is programmed to spot anything that is different and when you read about places and know what they have to offer then you programme those things into the brain so that when you are there you know what to look for - a bit like programming a computer I guess!

Gold shed into the foreland basins is typically widely dispersed in an overwhelming volume of immature basin-fill detritus of no economic significance. In the actively forming Canterbury Basin of New Zealand, minor gold concentration occurs at the mountain front in the bed of the Rakaia River, and 60 km downstream on beaches and the crest of foredunes at the river mouth.found this in a geo report

hi all
something i found in the doctors rooms a book called "selwyn from the hills to the sea" pages 90 and 91showed pictures of gold mining on the taumutu beach and ninety mile beach
worth a look if one lived in chch ibut i have noted that some of the area has been claimed
one opption is to approach the claim holder to seek permision for a look
having a claim myself people do ask from time to time for access which is normally given if they are not dredging
cheers kiwikeith

hope this works this time.......Gavin dansey's pass holiday park is a great base to go panning either right at the park or further up at the bridge..
i always get gold at the park itself but it is fine flakes..if you go further up to the bridge and go about 1 Km or further in along the river you will get bigger flakes
..i have camped at the park down by the river for a few weeks at a time and always got gold..lol..nothing big but always something in the pan.
and if a nice day and your in for a drive get up nice and early and go over the pass to nasbey with the detector..you may just find some nuggets..there are old gold diggings up around the and plenty of tailings from way back aperantly.
