Hello everybody,

I am in Otago since few days, and found some little gold, very exciting to found very small pieces of gold by eyes just bellow water, so, i found a place just in front of a rock with good gold flakes, and there is a crevice from the bank, trought the big rock, 1 meter long, and at least 40 cm deep.
I found little gold inside, and now it's gray light argile with inside look like very fine pyrite but no little stones mixed with this argile.
So, is it possible that some gold laying on the bottom of the crevice, under the gray light argile ?
thank you very much for you help,

Sincerely yours,

Jim

Good on you finding some good gold over here! I imagine the gold would settle to the very bottom. Try digging out a small area and testing it first perhaps?

Hi Jim- 9 times out of 10 gold doesnt work its way through the clay (which sounds like what you have in this case from your description).

But the only way to be sure is to dig it-that clay could be acting like a false bedrock and there could be a dozen 10 grammers down there...

Dig it is my advice!

Hello Chrischch and Overdog,

I have tried some little test under the clay but it's very difficult without the good tools, so, the crevice will sleep until my next Otago trip ;-)
I did a "river combo" treking, the Shotover is really wonderful, and the Skippers Road is very deadly !
Thank you for your help,

Best Regards,

Jim

Yes, the Skippers Road is famous here in NZ and one of few where you are not insured when driving a rental vehicle with some companies. You definately picked some good spots to visit. Enjoy the rest of your stay. :)

That wasn't you I met on top of the Skippers road was it Jim?

As for dangerous - you should try driving it with a log truck. I have experienced worse.

Not me that time. I was in a blue station wagon and I forget what colour the car was that I briefly spoke with - but since they commented on what a treacherous road it was I just had to see for myself lol
It was many years since I was last over that way, I had forgotten how far it was through there. I only got as far as the wrecked dredge.
